NAME: Midzi
AGE: 34
INSTAGRAM HANDLE: @deep_in_dxb
JOB TITLE: Founder & CEO, Deeper Beauty
MOVED TO THE UAE IN: 2017
Â
Midzi is the founder of Deeper Beauty, a melanin-friendly skin care line that's effective for all skin tones. She chose to study cosmetic chemistry so she could close the inclusivity gap that has long existed in the beauty industry.
Â
Before launching Deeper Beauty, Midzi had over a decade of experience as a multidisciplinary communications and product strategist in technology, media, and public sector initiatives throughout MENA. She consulted on behavioural economics programming with organisations like the UN, EU and the Gates Foundation. Previously, as Associate Director at Careem (acquired by Uber), she spearheaded the launch of Careem's "tech for good" product initiative and co-led the strategic expansion of the Grocery vertical in Abu Dhabi, launching three dark stores and running on-ground marketing campaigns.
Â
Midzi holds a Masters from University of Edinburgh, and very early on in my career she worked as a political journalist. In 2016 she did a TED talk about the importance of writing ourselves into history. She did this talk about 6 months after her father passed away, and it was a turning point in my journey of self belief and confidence.
Let's discover a day in the life and career of Midzi:
Â
6.30AM:
I’m an early bird, so I’m awake by 6.30AM, and I’ll do some journaling and check and adjust my day ahead as needed. I have the most clarity early in the morning, so I use that time to set my intentions for the day and make sure I’ve planned a day that is full but not overwhelming.
Â
8AM:
I’m either at the gym (VEO gym in downtown is my current fave), or a Motion cycling class. Starting my day with exercise keeps me productive and motivated throughout the day. I feel energized and I’ve blown off whatever steam was building up over the week.
Â
10AM:
I’m at my desk, working on anything and everything Deeper related. Some days it’s batch filming content around the house, some days it’s writing a proposal for a partnership with a well known salon, clinic or sports-related group. Often times I’m making sure I’m hitting my sales targets, and adjusting my strategy accordingly if I’m off track.
Â
12NOON:
Lunch time and catch up on social media. I’m constantly thinking of new ideas for content, as customers for beauty discover their new buys on TikTok and Instagram.
Â
2PM:
This is when my meetings usually start. I keep the mornings for myself because that’s when I have the most mental clarity. So I’ll check in with the warehouse to troubleshoot any issues with inventory or improve delivery times, or I’ll meet with a partner over a coffee to iron out our plans for an event.
Â
4PM:
I reserve late afternoons for mundane tasks: updating my tracker for project deadlines, doing bookkeeping, tweaking any content in the website backend. Boring, but absolutely essential as my business is growing.
Â
6PM:
I’m currently testing an AI skin analysis tool that provides preliminary diagnosis for a user’s skin, followed by a personalized routine and recommendations for products that are suitable. So early evenings I’m running the model, reviewing test data and compiling notes for the developers so we’re ready for launch in September.
Â
8PM:
Dinner time, followed by a quick 30min walk to end the day. I’m trying to keep moving and keep my steps up, and I can listen to my favorite podcast to unwind.
Â
10PM:
Last few messages and checks of social media for the day. And on the days I’m not chasing a deadline and doing some more work, this is when I do my skin care routine to get ready for bed, and read before I get to sleep at 11.30.
