SPF, Sweat and Sandstorms // The Real Summer Skincare Rules for Living in Dubai

If your skincare routine has stopped making sense somewhere around June, you're not doing anything wrong, Dubai summer genuinely breaks the rules that work everywhere else.

The humidity, the extreme heat, the constant back-and-forth between blistering outdoor air and aggressive air conditioning all put your skin through something most skincare advice, written for milder climates, simply doesn't account for. Here's what actually holds up in this particular kind of summer.

Your skin is producing more oil, not less

Counterintuitively, a lot of women switch to heavier products in summer because they assume hydration needs go up with the heat. In reality, humidity often means your skin is already producing plenty of oil, and piling rich creams on top just leads to congestion, breakouts and that persistently shiny, uncomfortable feeling by midday. This is the season to lighten up your routine, not weigh it down. A gel-based moisturiser or a lightweight lotion does the hydration job without smothering skin that's already working overtime.

SPF needs reapplying more than you think

Most of us apply sunscreen once in the morning and consider the job done. But between sweat, humidity and the sheer intensity of UV exposure here, SPF genuinely breaks down faster than in cooler climates. If you're outside for any real length of time, at the pool, walking to the car, doing the school run, a proper reapplication at midday makes a bigger difference than almost any other step in your routine. A setting spray SPF is worth keeping in your bag specifically for this, it goes on over makeup without undoing your morning effort.

Sweat-proof doesn't mean waterproof marketing, it means the right formulas

Genuinely humidity-resistant makeup relies less on "waterproof" claims and more on the right base products. A mattifying primer under a lightweight, buildable foundation holds up far better than a heavy, full-coverage base, which tends to slide by lunchtime regardless of what the label promises. Cream products in general struggle here, powder blush and bronzer stay put considerably longer than their cream counterparts once real heat and humidity get involved.

Hair needs a humidity strategy, not just a good cut

Frizz in this climate isn't about your hair type, it's about moisture in the air fighting moisture in your strands. An anti-humidity serum or cream applied to damp hair before it dries makes a genuinely noticeable difference, far more than styling products applied after the fact. If you're someone who's given up on certain styles entirely because "they never survive the walk to the car," it's worth trying a proper anti-humidity product before writing off the style altogether.

Sandstorm season needs its own small ritual

When the air genuinely fills with dust, and most of us know exactly which weeks those are, skin needs a gentler touch, not a stronger one. Over-cleansing or reaching for exfoliants to "get the grime off" tends to aggravate already-stressed skin. A simple double cleanse, an oil-based cleanser followed by a gentle gel one, does more good than scrubbing, and skin recovers faster from dust exposure with a calm routine than an aggressive one.

The step almost everyone skips: antioxidant serum

A vitamin C or other antioxidant serum in the morning, underneath sunscreen, does real, cumulative work against the environmental stress this climate puts on skin, sun exposure, pollution, heat, all of which accelerate visible ageing over time. It's a small, five-second addition to a routine that pays off far more than most of the trendier steps that come and go.

Dubai summer skin doesn't need more product, it needs the right product, applied with the climate in mind rather than a routine borrowed from somewhere cooler and drier. Lighten your base layer, reapply your SPF properly, and give your hair and skin a bit of grace during the harder weeks. Your skin is working hard just existing in this heat. Meet it halfway.
