Packed, Practical and Actually Stylish: Summer Travel Fashion for Mums on the Move

There's a particular kind of packing stress that only hits once you're travelling with kids. It's not just "what do I wear", it's "what can I wear that survives a spilled juice box, a long-haul flight, three time zones and still looks like I made an effort in the airport photos."

The good news is that stylish and practical aren't opposites, you just need to pack a little smarter.

Start with one colour palette and stick to it

The single biggest thing that makes family travel wardrobes work is choosing two or three colours that all mix and match, then packing only within that palette. Think sand, white and one accent, or navy, stone and a soft green. Every top works with every bottom, nothing gets left unworn, and you can pack half as much while still having outfit options for every day. It also means everyone's holiday photos actually look coordinated without anyone having tried too hard.

Fabric matters more than the outfit itself

Linen looks effortless but creases if a toddler so much as breathes near it, so save it for evenings when you're less likely to be down on the floor building sandcastles or wrestling a car seat buckle. For daytime, look for a linen-cotton blend or a technical travel fabric, they hold their shape, don't show sweat marks the way pure cotton does in this heat, and pack down small. A midi dress in one of these fabrics is doing about four jobs at once: it's cool, it doesn't need ironing, it works from breakfast through to dinner, and it photographs well without any effort.

One "does everything" outfit for travel days

Flying with kids is its own sport, and what you wear should work for it. A soft, slightly oversized shirt over leggings or wide-leg trousers gives you something you can nurse in, bend down in, sit cross-legged on the floor of a departure gate in, and still feel presentable stepping off the plane. Skip anything with a fiddly waistband or restrictive fit, you will regret it somewhere over the Arabian Sea.

Layer for the air conditioning, not just the destination

Wherever you're headed this summer, from a beach resort to a cooler European city, the plane, the car and most restaurants will be aggressively air-conditioned. A lightweight cardigan or oversized shirt that folds down to nothing in your bag is the single most useful item you'll pack, it goes over swimwear, over travel outfits, and doubles as an impromptu blanket for a sleeping child.

Shoes: pack fewer than you think you need

One good pair of supportive sandals you can walk miles in, one pair of trainers if you're doing anything active, and one slightly smarter pair for evenings, that's genuinely all most trips need. Anything beyond that is dead weight in a suitcase you'll likely also be carrying a stroller bag, snacks and someone else's shoes at some point anyway.

Don't forget you're allowed to look like yourself

It's easy, once the kids are packed for, the sun cream is sorted and the snacks are portioned, to throw in whatever's left over for yourself. But a couple of pieces that genuinely make you feel good, whether that's a great swimsuit, a favourite sundress, or simply earrings you love, are worth the small extra space. You'll wear them, and you'll be glad you did when you look back at the photos.

A quick packing formula that works

For a week away, aim for around six tops, three bottoms, two dresses, one light layer, three shoe options and enough swimwear to rotate while one dries. Mixed and matched within your chosen palette, that's easily two weeks of outfits from one modest suitcase, and considerably less stress at the airport scale.

Travelling with kids will never be entirely glamorous, and that's fine. But with a bit of planning, you can arrive looking like you've got it together, even if the truth, as always, is a little more chaotic behind the scenes.
