4 Reasons We're Excited About the New UAE Train

Etihad Rail's passenger service has quietly begun operating, and it's genuinely one of the more significant shifts in how we'll move around this country.

The introductory phase between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah launched on 30 June, with Dubai and Sharjah stations following on 30 September.

Here's why it's worth paying attention to.

1. It connects the whole country, not just two cities

The initial network links ten cities and areas, from Al Sila in the west through to Fujairah in the east, taking in Al Dhannah, Al Mirfa, Madinat Zayed, Liwa, Dubai, Abu Dhabi's Mohammed Bin Zayed City, Sharjah and Al Dhaid along the way. This isn't a single novelty line, it's a genuine cross-country network, with Sharjah's station completing the initial route in March 2027.

2. It's genuinely fast

Trains will run at speeds of up to 200km/h, cutting a journey like Abu Dhabi to Fujairah down to around an hour and 45 minutes, a route that currently eats up a considerable chunk of a day by road once you factor in traffic. For anyone who regularly drives between emirates for work or family, this is a real, practical time saving, not just a nice-to-have.

3. It's affordable enough to actually use regularly

Ticket prices on the Abu Dhabi-Fujairah route start from AED 55 in Comfort Class, rising to AED 120 for Premium Class. That pricing puts it firmly in reach for regular use, commuting, family visits, weekend trips, rather than a special-occasion splurge, which matters enormously for whether people actually adopt it long-term.

4. It's built for real scale

With a fleet of 13 trains carrying up to 400 passengers each, and an ambition to transport 36 million passengers annually by 2030, this is infrastructure designed for the country's long-term growth, not a symbolic gesture. As more stations open through late 2026 and into 2027, it has real potential to change daily commuting patterns across the Emirates, easing the pressure on the roads a lot of us currently sit in every week.

What to watch for next

Dubai and Al Dhaid in Sharjah come online on 30 September, with Abu Dhabi's Al Dhafra region following in December, and Sharjah's own station completing the initial route in March 2027.
