Weekend Cinema Trip? Here are our picks..

By Laura Davison

The weekend is calling and there is nothing we love more than to settle down into a comfortable cinema seat, complete with a mixed popcorn and M&M’s sugar high, escape the heat and watch a brand-new movie.

Our top 3 picks of the week:

Elvis

Even if you’re not a huge fan of the King of Rock and Roll’s music, chances are you will still love this movie with its epic cast, dazzling costumes, and celebration of music. Directed by the esteemed Baz Luhrmann, this biopic details the life of Elvis Presley, rhinestone jumpsuits and all. Detailing his meteoric rise to fame in the 1950s, growing up in Memphis, Tennessee and his love for his cultural neighbourhood, to his relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, played by Tom Hanks the movie showcases the highs and the lows from his childhood through to his death. The screenplay was co-written by Baz Luhrmann, Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce and Jeremy Doner and stars Austin Butler, Tom Hanks and Olivia DeJong.

Rated PG15

Jurassic World Dominion

This movie made the cut for this week's choices for nostalgia purposes (Jurassic Park was the first movie I saw at the cinema), and I also have teenage boys who are eagerly awaiting its viewing. Four years after the destruction of Isla Nublar, dinosaurs now live alongside humans all over the world. This fragile balance will reshape the future and determine finally who will remain the predators – humans or dinosaurs. Jam-packed full of action, Jurassic World Dominion promises to be equal parts entertaining and perhaps a touch on the scary side! The film stars Chris Pratt, Sam Neill and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Rated PG13

Top Gun: Maverick

One of the best films we’ve seen in a while, Top Gun: Maverick needs no introduction. With Tom Cruise at his finest as the legendary Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, this thrilling sequel is even better than the original in our opinion. A test pilot, Maverick has over thirty years of service and is the best in the business. Sent back to Top Gun Academy to train a team of graduates for a special assignment with plenty of twists and turns along the way, who will survive? From the Iceman x Maverick bromance to an initial spiky relationship with ‘Rooster’, the son of his old Co-Pilot Goose, there’s also a love story intertwined throughout. A real feel-good film packed full of nostalgia and adrenaline, you will leave the cinema wanting to watch it all over again.

Starring Tom Cruise, Jon Hamm and Jennifer Connelly.

Rated PG13
