I've just done 4 hotels in 6 days, so I feel i'm speaking from a voice of knowledge here. From soaking in bubble baths to sipping bubbly, there are many things to love about hotel rooms. But while they may present a pristine and inviting environment at first glance, appearances can be deceiving.
In reality, not all hotels adhere to strict cleaning and sanitizing protocols — especially in areas that are less obvious to the casual observer.
Here are just some things you should never do in a hotel room if you want to stay hygienic and healthy.
Use the Drinking Glasses Without Washing Them First
The drinking glasses in hotel rooms might look clean, but they may not have been properly sanitized between guests. Some housekeeping staff might only rinse them or wipe them down instead of using high-temperature sanitation.
What to Do Instead:
✔ Rinse the glasses with hot water and soap before using them.
✔ Use the disposable cups provided (if available).
Walk Barefoot on the Carpet
Hotel carpets can harbor bacteria, fungi, and allergens because they aren’t deep-cleaned as often as you might think. They can trap dirt from previous guests, spilled drinks, and even pet dander in pet-friendly hotels.
What to Do Instead:
✔ Wear socks, slippers, or flip-flops inside the room.
✔ Avoid placing personal items like clothes or bags directly on the carpet.
Sit or Lie on the Bedspread
While sheets and pillowcases are changed after each guest, the bedspread or comforter often isn’t. Many hotels only wash them periodically, meaning they could be covered in bacteria, bodily fluids, and dust mites.
What to Do Instead:
✔ Fold the bedspread down or remove it before sitting or lying on the bed.
✔ If you’re concerned, bring a lightweight travel blanket or sleep sack.
Use the Remote Control Without Cleaning It
One of the germiest objects in a hotel room is the TV remote control. It’s handled by multiple guests and rarely gets sanitized properly.
What to Do Instead:
✔ Wipe down the remote with disinfectant wipes before using it.
✔ Use a plastic bag or tissue to cover it while pressing buttons.
Place Your Luggage on the Bed
Your suitcase has been rolling around airports, sidewalks, and taxis, picking up dirt and germs along the way. Placing it on the bed transfers bacteria and potential bed bugs onto your sleeping space.
What to Do Instead:
✔ Use the luggage rack provided in the room.
✔ If no rack is available, keep your suitcase on a hard surface like a table or floor (away from the carpet).
Forget to Check for Bed Bugs
Even high-end hotels can have bed bugs. These tiny pests can hitch a ride home with you, leading to a nightmare infestation.
How to Check for Bed Bugs:
✔ Inspect the mattress seams, headboard, and bedding for small brown or black spots.
✔ Keep your luggage off the bed and store it in the bathroom if concerned.
✔ If you spot signs of bed bugs, request a new room on a different floor.
Use the Hotel Kettle Without Cleaning It
Some guests have been known to misuse hotel kettles for unsanitary purposes (like boiling socks or even worse things). Since kettles aren’t always deep-cleaned, bacteria and leftover residues can linger.
What to Do Instead:
✔ Rinse the kettle thoroughly with hot water before using it.
✔ If unsure, boil a full pot of water and discard it before making drinks.
Trust That the Bathroom Is 100% Clean
While bathrooms are cleaned daily, certain areas like the toilet handle, faucet, and shower controls might not be disinfected as thoroughly as you’d hope.
What to Do Instead:
✔ Wipe down high-touch areas (toilet handle, sink knobs, light switches) with disinfectant wipes.
✔ Use your own toiletries instead of shared items like bar soap.
9. Leave Your Toothbrush on the Bathroom Counter
Hotel bathroom counters may have been wiped down with the same cloth used for other surfaces, increasing the risk of contamination. Placing your toothbrush directly on the counter exposes it to bacteria.
What to Do Instead:
✔ Use a travel toothbrush cover or a disposable cup to store your toothbrush upright
.✔ If you forget a cover, place a tissue or napkin under your toothbrush to keep it off the counter.
Use the Ice Bucket Without a Liner
Hotel ice buckets might not be cleaned between guests and could have been used for non-ice-related purposes (like chilling drinks or worse).
What to Do Instead:
✔ Always use the plastic liner provided before filling the bucket with ice.
✔ If no liner is available, rinse the bucket thoroughly with hot water.
While hotels do their best to maintain cleanliness, taking extra precautions can help you avoid unnecessary exposure to germs. Simple steps like washing your hands, wiping down surfaces, and being mindful of where you place your belongings can make your stay much more hygienic.
Travel well. Stay healthy!
