New Study Confirms Anti-Aging Benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

DP World’s Aviv Clinics, one of the most advanced brain clinics in the world, shares the results of a new study showing a unique hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) protocol is effective for enhancing physical performance in aging adults.  The study, Physical enhancement of older adults using hyperbaric oxygen: a randomized controlled trial, was conducted by Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Research at the Shamir Medical Center and Tel Aviv University, andpublished in the BioMed Central journal Geriatrics.

The study assessed the impact of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on physical performance and cardiac perfusion—how blood flows to the heart muscle—in non-pathological aging adults. In this randomized controlled trial, 63 participants aged 65 and older were divided into two groups: a control group and an HBOT treatment group. The HBOT group underwent 60 daily HBOT sessions following a specific protocol. Participants' cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) results, including VO2Max (maximal oxygen consumption capacity), anaerobic threshold (the exertion level between aerobic and anaerobic performance), and maximal power generation, were evaluated. Additionally, cardiac perfusion was assessed using advanced cardiac MRI techniques.

The results revealed that participants following the HBOT protocol experienced significant improvements in VO2Max, VO2Max per body weight, maximal power, and anaerobic threshold. Compared to the control group, the HBOT group also showed notable increases in cardiac blood flow and cardiac blood volume, highlighting the therapy's effectiveness in enhancing both physical performance and cardiac health.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment that administers 100% oxygen at increased environmental pressure. Aviv Clinics' unique HBOT protocol, which varies oxygen levels throughout the treatment, has been proven to repair and regenerate damaged brain tissue in several types of brain injuries. This includes traumatic brain injury, stroke, PTSD, long COVID, and age-related cognitive decline, among others.

DP World’s Aviv Clinics provides a cutting-edge treatment program delivered by a team of multidisciplinary medical experts, aiming to enhance patients' quality of life. The Clinic’s Medical Program begins with a thorough evaluation of the patient’s physical and neurological condition to determine suitability for the program. For those who qualify, the team crafts a detailed treatment plan that integrates Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) with personalized cognitive and physical training, alongside dietary coaching for a comprehensive approach to health. HBOT sessions take place in advanced multiplace chambers that are comfortable, secure, and allow medical staff to be present during treatments. The elevated pressure within these chambers creates an optimal environment for oxygenation, promoting the regeneration and healing of damaged brain and body tissues.
