Love them or loathe them and despite their humble origins as house shoes, mesh ballet flats (or fishnet flats) have been creeping all over our social media feeds and in the stores since last Spring with no sign of slowing down.
Since Alaïa’s season-defining take on the shoe, shredding the classic ballet flat of it’s good-girl reputation, which catapulted them into being the most sought-after shoes last season, the trend has garnered more strength with high-street and Amazon versions cropping up everywhere. Again, TikTok has paved the way for generational influence with the hashtag #Meshflats having over 2.3 million views on the platform.
All things sheer (in clothes) is another hot trend this AW24 with mesh flats taking the see-through look to a new level. But did you know, there are different styles of this new take on the classic ballet flat.
Classic Mesh: The dainty and just a bit cheeky versions are a pure mesh form of the classic strapless ballet flat and Mary Jane’s (making them more interesting than the staple leather or satin options) coming in all different colours – these are particularly feminine and are a great nod to the trend. If you love a traditional ballet flat, you’ll probably prefer the classic, plain mesh.
Woven: Alaïa’s fishnet ballet flats have become perhaps the most visible example of the woven mesh trend, popping up on an endless list of celebrities and editors. Whilst the hefty price-tag may not appeal to many, especially as this shoe is a trend that will not always be around, Amazon, Steve Madden, Mango plus many more offer lookalike pairs.
Embellished: Probably my favourite take on the style, embellished with crystals, pearls and embroidery, this style really packs a punch when teamed with an outfit. If you’re more adventurous with your fashion choices, these are the ideal flats for you.
If I haven’t sold them to you already (and if you like the idea of being able to see your toes), another feature I love about these shoes, along with the fact that they are also extremely comfortable, is that they are SO lightweight and breathable (on your feet and to carry) making them ideal shoes to pack for a holiday and also, to wear all year round in the UAE. They are perfect for warmer weather - especially when your feet need all the fresh air they can get.
How I’m Wearing Them
When it comes to styling the flats, keep your outfits simple and let the shoes do all the talking. I love wearing mine with a pair of wide leg jeans and a white tee with chunky gold jewellery for a laid-back casual look - perfect for low-key occasions. I also love to wear them with short summer dresses or a matching top and shorts co-ord set. For the office, team the flats with tailored trousers, a white button-down shirt and blazer.
To conclude, accessories are a great way to add a trending fashion statement to your outfit and wardrobe making the mesh ballet flats the perfect outfit elevation.
