#LifeLessons - The Biggest Life Learnings Of Victoria Myers

NAME: Victoria Myers

AGE: 45

INSTAGRAM HANDLE: @victoriamyersretail

JOB TITLE: Founder of the Small Retailer Network

Victoria Myers is a Retail Business Mentor, speaker, and founder of the Small Retailer Network, a thriving community supporting over 350 independent retail business owners across the UAE. With 25 years of experience at leading brands including Radley London, Karen Millen, and Selfridges, she brings big-brand insights to small businesses, helping them grow with confidence and strategy.

After an eight-year career break to raise her two children and relocate from the UK to the UAE, Victoria set out to build a business that allowed her to work on her own terms while supporting others in achieving their goals. What began as a single event with zero attendees has grown into a flourishing network where business owners share knowledge, support one another, and achieve tangible results.

Today Victoria shares her biggest life learnings with us:

#LIFELESSON – 1 - Failure is Success in Progress

Resilience is arguably the most significant skill I have developed in my life and career.  Every major setback that I’ve experienced in life has ultimately led to bigger and better outcomes later down the line, from being passed over for a longed-for promotion, to my first-ever business event when nobody showed up.

That’s not to say that they didn’t feel devastated at the time, and there are many occasions I have been tempted to throw in the towel.  But after the initial disappointment wears off, instead of quitting, I have always tried to view each setback or failure as a learning opportunity, and a chance to get feedback, reassess my strategy, reset my priorities, and try again.

This mindset has carried me through challenges in my corporate career, my personal life, and my entrepreneurial journey.  It allowed me to build my business even after the pain and embarrassment of sitting alone in a café and having to admit to the waiter that nobody else was coming to join me.

Failure is a part of life, but I have learned that it is just a step on the journey, not the end of the road.

#LIFELESSON – 2 - Community is Everything

I firmly believe that finding your tribe will change your life, and nobody should struggle alone.

Everything is “figureoutable” on your own, of course. With endless free online resources, we can get the answers to anything at any time, but in my experience, connecting with a community that truly understands your situation is the fastest path to real, long-term success.

Personally, I’ve leaned on community at every stage in my life. From career challenges, pregnancy and motherhood, weight loss, navigating expat life, or business growth, finding people going through the same experiences, who could offer support, advice, encouragement, and friendship, has made all the difference to me.

Having the right community has made every new venture more enjoyable, helped me to keep going in challenging times, brought fresh perspectives and the benefit of real experiences.  This is why I am so passionate about building my own community and continue to invest my time and money in membership of other groups which support me in my ongoing business and personal journey.

#LIFELESSON – 3 - Work/Life Balance Is a Myth

As women, we are sold the idea that work and life should somehow be perfectly balanced at all times – and that we should be excelling in both areas, every day of our lives.

But especially since becoming a parent, I’ve realised that balance, as it’s often presented, is a myth. Life and work aren’t two distinct boxes we can neatly separate; they’re part of a continuum, each with a multitude of overlapping areas, all of which need varying amounts of attention at different times.

This realisation has allowed me to lean into different areas of focus as and when they need it, rather than strictly allocating time and resources according to specific rules.  Embracing this fluidity has allowed so much more ease and flow into my life, helped me to let go of guilt and enjoy the “messy middle” of life, motherhood and entrepreneurship.
