As the Holy Month is almost upon us here in the UAE, it’s that time of year again to embrace more of a modest approach with our clothing and accessories whilst expressing our individual style.

Ramadan is a sacred time marked by spiritual reflection, family gatherings and shared meals.  Dressing modestly during Ramadan enhances the reverence of this special occasion while ensuring comfort and style.  But although loose fitting and sometimes oversized modest attire is deemed appropriate and expected, how can we dress for Ramadan…without looking like a tent?

Here are my top tips on how to elevate your Ramadan style with confidence, elegance and grace.

·      Tailored and well-cut pieces

Invest in well-tailored pieces that flatter your figure and fit you perfectly.  Whether it’s a tailored blazer, a fitted maxi-dress, kaftan or a pair of tailored trousers, well-fitted clothing can elevate your style and make you feel confident and empowered.

·      The Waistline

The key point of loose clothing is always the waistline in order for your silhouette to be enhanced.  Adding a belt is a simple yet effective way to bring structure to oversized clothing.  Whether you choose a statement belt to add a pop of style or a minimalist one for a subtle touch, this technique ensures that your loose, flowy outfit looks chic and sophisticated, not shapeless.

·      Layering

Layering is particularly effective when creating visual interest through contrasts – both in fit and in style.  Whilst wearing a tent-like, loose maxi-dress might overwhelm your figure, you can create sophisticated looks by combining different proportions and fits.  For example, pair a short, fitted jacket (like a cropped trench, bomber or denim jacket) with a long flowing maxi dress or match a loose, flowy top with slim-fit trousers.  The contrast in lengths, fits and textures creates a dynamic layered effect while maintaining balance.

·      Proportions

When wearing loose clothes, proportion is everything.  If you’re petite, avoid overwhelming your frame with extremely oversized pieces. Instead, choose items that are just slightly loose.  Taller individuals can generally carry more volume without looking swamped by the fabric.

·      Focus on Quality Fabrics

The fabric of loose clothing plays an important role in determining whether your outfit looks polished or unkempt.  Opt for pieces made from high-quality materials like silk, structured cotton or linen.  These fabrics drape beautifully and add a touch of elegance to the overall look.  Premium materials not only elevate the appearance of oversized clothing but also help maintain their shape, preventing the outfit from appearing baggy or sloppy. Investing in well-made fabrics ensures your Ramadan wardrobe feels luxurious and sophisticated while maintaining the comfort and ease.

·      Accessorize

Top of the class here is a belt.  Belts are great for cinching in the waistline as well as lengthening the leg line. Pair a belt with a loose, long-sleeved maxi dress for a stylish Ramadan look.  They can also be worn over a long kaftan, worn over a long dress for an elegant modest fit.  A scarf can also enhance a look adding a layering effect and give more dimension to an oversized style.  A structured, sleek clutch bag, statement earrings or delicate necklace can instantly elevate your Ramadan look and add a touch of effortless glamour.  Opt for minimalist and elegant pieces when it comes to jewellery that complement your outfit without competing for attention.

·      Neutral Colours

Neutral colours make outfits chic and classy.  For example, a neutral long kaftan is versatile and timeless and can work with any outfit.  Neutral colours such as black, beige, grey, white, cream and brown never date and give an air of sophistication.

·      Confidence is Key

Above all, remember that confidence is the most important accessory you can wear.  Own your style choices with confidence and you’ll always look and feel your best, no matter what you’re wearing.

Wishing you a blessed Ramadan!
