5 Things That Could Be Sabotaging Your Hair

Visiting the salon is undeniably a real treat and a fantastic form of self-care for women. From being advised on the perfect style for you, through to the glorious head massage at the sink, and walking out feeling like the best version of yourself, a trip to the salon is in our opinion a necessity and something we look forward to scheduling on our calendar!

However, amidst the busy lives that we lead, how can we ensure our hair is kept looking its best until our next appointment?

“There are many things we can do. When we are not happy with our hair, it’s usually about the things we aren’t doing, rather than the things we are”.

Emma Williamson, Hair Stylist at Tara Rose Salon,

Below are some of the main hair offences that could be secretly sabotaging our mane – are you an offender?

1. You are not using heat protection

How you take care of your hair at home matters, especially when it comes to the products that you use, or don’t use. If you’re a lover of heat styling, including straighteners, tongs etc, then you 100% will need to use a heat-protecting spray. These products create a barrier between the hair and heat, preventing damage such as split ends, frizz and flyaways.

2. Not getting regular trims

Regular trims are a must to maintain optimal hair health. The recommended time between cuts is six weeks and helps get rid of split and dead ends. Contrary to popular belief having a haircut doesn’t make your hair grow faster, rather getting rid of the breakage gives the appearance that hair is growing faster and offers an overall healthier look.

3. Not using the correct products

Hair care is a lot like skincare; what works for one does not necessarily work for all. Using the correct products for your hair type is imperative and it’s always advisable to take your stylist's recommendations, since they know your hair and can prescribe what will work best for you.

4. Not using a shower filter

A shower filter is a must when living in this region and will ensure that the water you use at home is free from toxins and chlorine, which inevitably impacts hair growth and overall health. If your water quality is bad, it can cause a wealth of issues including making it look dull and lifeless as well as being more open to breaking and tangling.

5. Not using a conditioning hair mask

During the drier months, the lack of moisture in the air can be noticeable on the skin and also the hair too. Adding a deep conditioning treatment at least once a fortnight can help to repair any damaged hair and give an extra boost of hydration, nourishment and shine.
